Hearts of stone

Going for complexities of emotion —

Try using Katherine’s hearts of stone as a writing prompt to explore emotion.

Have you ever encountered a lack of warmth upon entering a room — perhaps there was a discussion that you interrupted, and you wonder if that was about you. The air was thick with things just said, that you did not hear.

Writing prompt — Try writing up this situation. Include a few brief details of place, such as a smell and sounds,  that help set the scene and increase the tension.

Put your character in the place of  the awkward person, target of some unspecified disapproval. How will the character get past this? What is a meek response? What would happen if the character approaches the moment from a position of strength?

Can meekness also be strength, and how would you bring that out?

— Manna is everywhere! —

A. D. Morel is a pen name for Alison Dibble. Alison took a pen name because in her day job as an ecologist she has written more than 30 technical peer review papers to report scientific studies she has undertaken. When she chose to write fiction, she wanted freedom from the constraints of always having to present the facts from an unbiased stance.
